Lying

Lying is something that is inherently bad, correct?

We are taught not to lie ever since we are little, that it is wrong and only "bad" people lie to cover up the truth.

Of course, there is always the discussion of "white lies" but I won't really get into that, everyone knows that lying for the right reasons may be a good thing.

But what about lying for not the right reasons?

I have been thinking about lying more and more, especially recently, and I have realized that I am actually pretty spectacular at doing it.  Some may even say that I have a "gift" for lying.  Now I understand that this may not be the best thing to be good at, but to those people I reply, "if you are talented at something, then why not use that talent."

Some people may be talented pianists, others talented writers, computer programmers, or business owners... I am a talented liar.

I started lying when I was very little, to my parents, to my sister, to my teachers, and I was often caught in my lies, as I would create intricate stories which people could easily see through to determine the falsity of what I was saying.  As I grew, however, I gained more of a knack for it and it became simpler for me.

Today, I may even say that I enjoy lying.  I may lie just for the fun of it sometimes, just because I want to see if I can get the better of the person that I am lying to.  The strangest part is that most people never realize that they are being told false information.  I guess they just think that because I am a self respecting 20 year old male that they will take everything I say for truth.

I try not to lie to my friends, but sometimes a lie just may slip out, I can't help it, it has somewhat become who I am.

The worst part about becoming such a masterful liar is that occasionally if I repeat a lie enough, even I start believing it.  This can become quite confusing sometimes, but occasionally it can be helpful as well.

I wonder, how many other liars like me there are in the world, people who enjoy spreading falsity just for fun.  I try not to lie about important things, just small things, and I am not a dishonest person in other aspects of my life, I don't steal, I hardly ever cheat, etc.  I guess I just have a lying problem.

What are your experiences with lying?  What do you think about my lying situation?

Thanks for reading, peace.

ps. this entire article may be a lie.

  1. There have been several times where I concealed the truth from family and friends. I have a talent for lying as well. In the end, I've always wondered should I tell them the truth or not ? And till this day I can't even answer that question.

  2. I never lie, which gets me into all sorts of trouble. But I don't care. Everybody and their mother lies, so there have to be some people to balance it out.

  3. All I can say is, I've become such a good liar that people will mistake it for the truth. I don't lie about big things, but the small ones do come back to get me in a bit of trouble. I have such a creative mind that my lies come a little too natural for me.

  7. I never lie to anyone really. I am a very truthful person, but I don't think people like the truth.

  12. I can relate. I too have a gift for lying. Abraham Lincoln once said, "No man has a good enough memory to be a successful liar". I beg to differ.

  16. One of my relatives has a saying for business owners and politicians, "If you aren't telling at least 100 lies a day you won't get far". We laugh but it's not far from the truth.

  17. I'm not a liar per se, but I am a manipulator at times. I can say not only the right things, but I say them the right way, to get people to hear and think the way that I want them to. Sometimes this involves lying, sometimes it just involves telling the truth a certain way.

The easiest way to lie is definitely to stay within reason, stay vague but confidently informed, and not give someone a reason to think that you're lying.

Say you're late for work because you were out drinking and you slept in. If you have a big elaborate story, they might start asking questions. But if you just say "Sorry I'm late, I got stuck behind an idiot on the freeway" and then get immediately to work, why would they ask you questions? You're being vague enough that you don't have to really make anything up, but it sounds reasonable enough ("Oh, I've gotten caught behind a dumbass before, I know how he feels") that it's not worth questioning for details.

But yeah, for me it's not really lying so much as it is choosing my words.

  19. I really don't think it's inherently bad but usually it's bad. There are times however when it's right I guess.

  20. Yeah people have to choose between truth and politeness. That just hapens too often.

  21. Well I can tell you are telling the truth about lying you are still a liar, however if you lied about being a liar you are also still a liar.

Don't you ever get tripped up on small details, i mean 1 lie would be ok, but having to keep up with multiples lies must get quite hard.

  23. I don't lie for fun, but I am good at it. Makes people that catch me lying (I.e they found out the truth) suspicious, because they realise how good at it I am.

So I tried to lie less well.

    Not the greatest idea =p

  30. yeah it's bad to lie...yet the first thing a lot of kids are told is that if they're bad then Santa won't bring them any presents at Christmas!!!!

  35. I think I just put you at 200 followers ;)

As far as lying goes, I felt exactly the same way about myself when I was in High School. for myself, I thing it was more of an ego thing. Proving to myself that I was better than others as I could easily fool them into believing whatever I wanted them to. Since then, about 6 years have past and after some introspection I realize it was cause I felt powerless on the inside.

Holy cow. Awesome and thought provoking post!!! Had me rambeling good there.

  36. I'm a great liar actually.
I usually lie to girls whom I am hitting on or just being friendly with. They always believe me but usually I tell them in the end I was lying so they just laugh, but mostly everybody believes me. Its fun :D. Keep on lying.

  42. I'll admit I do lie a little more than your average person, but like you, I don't lie about the important stuff. Sometimes I'll just lie to get out of a conversation I don't want to have. Sometimes I'll lie so I don't have shit to do. But I can be pretty lazy at times though. : /

  43. Roflcopter, good buddy. I must say though, I detest lying more than cottage cheese. Lying to family is fair game, and the occasional white lie does wonders.
