Favorites

Everyone has favorites, be it a favorite football team, favorite food, favorite car, favorite place to visit, or favorite television show. People naturally have things in their life that they prefer over other things.

These opinions can be based upon many different possibilities, depending on past experiences and values.

I've come to realize, however, that I have very few favorite things. Recently I was talking to a friend of mine, and it came to my attention that I don't believe I actually have a favorite food, which I actually think is something that everyone should have! There are foods that I would rather eat over other foods (for example I detest tomatoes), but there is no food of meal that I feel I could eat every single day for the rest of my life without becoming tired of it.

So anyway, I was discussing favorites with my friend and I realized that I have very few favorite things, no favorite color, person, etc. (see list in first sentence for more favorites which I do not have).

I question why I don't have any strong opinions on these things.  Was it my upbringing that caused me to be so un-opinionated?

I do have an older sister who can have some very strong opinions on certain subjects, so I feel that as we were growing up as children her opinions could sometimes become mine, but I find it hard to believe that now, as an adult, I would still lack the capabilities of creating strong opinions for myself. Maybe being raised with her strong will and ideas stopped my "opinionatedness" from developing?

I try to decide favorites, but sometimes it can be hard to do because I have a pretty easy going personality and it is simple for me to see the "pros" in many things.

What are your ideas about favorites?
How are they formed?
What are some of your favorite things?

Thanks for reading, peace.

  1. Hey, whatever man. I don't have any favorites I could name off the top of my head either. And I don't really consider anyone my BEST friend. I just know who the really good ones are.

  3. i think with most favorites (atleast persons, celebs or teams in sport) we idolize them because we identify ourselves with them. they are just a little better than ourselves.

  4. There are just some things that I don't care about. I have my own strong political opinion because I care about the way my country is ruled etc.
I guess that is the nature of favourites. You have to care about something to form an opinion of it.
I am basically apathetic when it comes to most things like pretty much anything you mentioned in the first line.

  7. "Favorites" are things that tend to crop up more than others. The reason for liking something is because of the memories and feelings connected to it.

At least that'd explain why I love pizza so much...

  9. We look for ourselves in the world around us. Very few people gravitate towards things that are the complete and total opposite of who they are.

"Opposites attract" is one of the biggest lies ever told. No one like their opposite. Your opposite "opposes" you, and no one wants to be in a constant state of opposition. Even the people who love to fight against things need a break sometimes....

  10. I believe you're not assertive enough. Maybe you think you will be negatively judged if you like certain sports team without knowing the entire roster or having a favorite restaurant that other people might think is terrible. Maybe not. However, if so then just shut others' opinions out and just go with your own. It's what makes you, YOU.

Favorites: Arsenal, Minnesota Vikings, Boise State Broncos, Breakfast Burritos from Berto's, FIFA the videogame, Buffalo Wild Wings, Mexico's National Team, Nike Shoes, Widmer Heffys, Captain and Coke, and Subaru

  19. I am the same, why make it a good thing to have favorites? It just limits you. I can really enjoy lots of different foods instead of just a favorite, I'll never care about what number I get allocated or what colour top I'm wearing.

  20. Someone beat me to the Sound of Music reference. I tell people my favorite colour is steel, but purple is pretty sweet.
